This documentary examines what really happened between 1618 and 1619 in the Dutch city of Dordrecht, during one of the darkest episodes in the history of Protestantism. What began as a theological debate ended in a political trial, where religious power allied with military might to crush all dissent. The Remonstrants—followers of James Arminius—were condemned as heretics, expelled, imprisoned, exiled, and even executed. The Synod of Dordrecht wasn’t just a church council: it was a purge disguised as orthodoxy. The envoy of the English delegation, John Hales, witnessed it all. He arrived convinced of the Calvinist cause, but left deeply disillusioned. The Lutheran theologian Nicolaus Hunnius, a contemporary of the synod, compared it to Trent. The historian Knappert directly called it the “Reformed Inquisition.” Today we’re going to tell you what isn’t preached from neo-Calvinist pulpits: the real, obscure Synod of Dort.
