Please click on the link to view William Burt Pope’s Discussion of the History of Controversy Over Vocation/Calling and Election from pp. 348-357 of the second volume of his 3-volume systematic theology, A Compendium of Christian Theology. The full 3 volume systematic theology can be accessed here. As Pope introduces his discussion, he mentions that “It is with the perversion of the Predestination idea that we have mainly to do.” Pope uses the term “vocation” for what is most typically called “calling” in theological discussion today. His discussion is, of course, dated, as the second edition of his systematic theology, from which this excerpt is taken, was published in 1889. Still, there is value in reading his discussion of the history of the controversy up until the time of writing. Besides, historically speaking, that still covers the vast majority of the time of the controversy!
